O’Neill walks off to give Generals series lead

JACKSON, Tenn — “Andrew Moore’s stellar performance on the mound and Tyler O’Neill’s heroics at the plate led the Generals to a dramatic 3-0 win over Montgomery in ten innings in Jackson Wednesday night, giving the team a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five North Division Series. Moore pitched nine scoreless innings and faced the minimum, but the Generals did not win it until Tyler O’Neill mashed a three-run walk-off homer to seal the deal.

The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the 10th inning. With one out, Montgomery’s Jaye Chapman (0-1, 40.50) walked Ian Miller and Benji Gonzalez to put two men on. Tim Lopes then struck out for the second out of the inning, setting the table for Tyler O’Neill. O’Neill battled his way to a full count before crushing a full count offering well over the left field fence to win it for the Generals.

After ten walk-off wins in the regular season, the Generals won a thriller via the walk-off to open up their first playoff appearance since 2012. Tyler O’Neill had one game-winning homer in the regular season, smashing a grand slam to cap off an eight-RBI effort June 8versus Pensacola.

Though Andrew Moore was the story on the mound, Brandon Sisk (1-0, 0.00) earned the victory with a perfect tenth inning in relief. He struck out a pair, getting Willy Adames to send the game to the bottom of the frame still scoreless.

Moore turned in maybe his best effort of the year despite the no-decision. The right-hander went nine innings, allowing just one hit while facing the minimum. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. He finished by striking out six of the final seven batters he faced. Moore also went nine scoreless versus Montgomery August 2 in a regular season win.

Jackson’s starter was perfect through six innings, retiring all 18 men he faced on just 60 pitches. Montgomery finally got a man on in the seventh, as Kean Wong reached on a bunt single. He was promptly gunned down trying to steal second base. That wound up being the only man the Biscuits put on in ten innings.

O’Neill led the way on offense, with two of the team’s six hits while also drawing a pair of walks. Prior to the his blast, the Generals were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Montgomery’s Chih-Wei Hu was strong in his own right, pitching 7.2 shutout frames for the visitors.

The victory gives Jackson a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five North Division Series and continues the team’s success against Montgomery. Including the regular season, the Generals have taken 17 of 21 versus the Biscuits.
