Lady Hawks off to a great start

JACKSON, Tenn — The South Side Lady Hawks basketball team won the district championship last season. They were then bounced from the post season in the first round of regional’s.  This season their off to a hot start, trying to make sure there are no early exits come this season.

The Hawks only return two starters from last year’s team, but due to a strong off season, their picking things up where they left off due to one thing, defense.

Bianca Cunningham a guard for the Hawks happens to be one of the team leaders, and said success doesn’t come easy and that’s why her team is taking no days off.

“Grind, grind in the preseason, grind every day, every chance you get, you got to grind,” Cunningham said.

On the court the girls are tenacious, hounding the other team’s offense, which leads to easy baskets for the Lady Hawks. A style head coach Brent Mcneal approves.

“Most people call us bullies for some reason, so we are a physical team because we play defense,” Mcneal said.  “You know that’s kind of what we predicate on. We want to play defense and we’ll get our offense from that.”

The Lady Hawks will need a big performance from their defense when they take on the Haywood Tomcats Friday night.
