It is a type of therapy for alcohol and drug abusers that is unique for Tennessee, and it is less than an hour from Jackson.  McKenzie is home to Spirit Lake Recovery, a facility that uses equine therapy to help addicts recover.
 
Addicts are assigned a horse upon entering the facility and they are required to care for that horse as well as guide the horse through different obstacle courses and challenges.  Counselors watch during those challenges and help addicts apply lessons learned in therapy to the challenges they are directly facing.
 
Leaders at Spirit Lake Recovery said they see this type of therapy help accelerate drug addicts on the road to recovery by teaching them responsibility, anger management and communication.
