The Union Bulldogs men's basketball team lost its leading and second leading scorers from last season and are still picked to finish first in the Transouth Conference for the 2009-2010 season.

In the Bulldogs first year under new head coach David Niven, the conference's coaches picked them three points ahead of second place Freed-Hardeman University. The Lions received 70 votes in the preseason poll.

Niven's Bulldogs lost sharp shooter Matt Neaville and swing man Brian Lake to graduation, but are returning third leading scorer Greg Truvillion to a very deep roster.

Out of all the Transouth head coaches, Niven is the only neophyte.  He served as an assistant to Ralph Turner at Union for the last 12 years.

Bethel was the other West Tennessee school to garner votes.  They finished eighth with 24.
