The Lambuth Eagles narrowly
escaped McKenzie, Tenn. with
a 19-16 win over Bethel
University Saturday night.
Lambuth came in ranked sixth
in country, and Bethel with
a 2-5 record.
Early scores gave the Eagles
a 7-3 lead after halftime,
but neither team was able to
take control. With 5:29 left
in the game, Bethel
quarterback Troy Watson
scored from a yard out to
give Bethel a 10-7 lead.
Lambuth was unable to move
the ball on the ensuing
possession and was forced to
punt. The Wildcats looked to
have the game in hand as
they drove deep into Eagle
territory, but Bethel
running back Josh Boyd
fumbled, and Jamie Payton
recovered, giving Lambuth a
chance.
A seven-play, 68-yard drive
ended in a 32-yard field
goal by Nathan O'Jibway,
tying the game and sending
it to overtime.
In the first extra period,
both teams traded field
goals, then both teams
traded misses in the second.
In the third overtime, Sean
Frazer gave Bethel a 16-13
lead.
On the next Lambuth
possession, freshman
quarterback Kelvin Martin
scored to give Lambuth the
win.
Lambuth totaled 451 yards of
offense, compared to
Bethel's 267. Boyd led all
rushers with 104 yards on
the ground, and Lambuth's
E.J. Adams caught six passes
for 106 yards to lead all
receivers.
The win is the longest game
in Lambuth history and
improves the Eagles to 8-0.
Bethel drops to 2-6.
Lambuth will face Belhaven
Oct. 31 in their homecoming
game, and Bethel hosts
Kentucky Christian.
