The Lambuth Eagles narrowly escaped McKenzie, Tenn. with a 19-16 win over Bethel University Saturday night.

Lambuth came in ranked sixth in country, and Bethel with a 2-5 record.

Early scores gave the Eagles a 7-3 lead after halftime, but neither team was able to take control. With 5:29 left in the game, Bethel quarterback Troy Watson scored from a yard out to give Bethel a 10-7 lead.

Lambuth was unable to move the ball on the ensuing possession and was forced to punt. The Wildcats looked to have the game in hand as they drove deep into Eagle territory, but Bethel running back Josh Boyd fumbled, and Jamie Payton recovered, giving Lambuth a chance.

A seven-play, 68-yard drive ended in a 32-yard field goal by Nathan O'Jibway, tying the game and sending it to overtime.

In the first extra period, both teams traded field goals, then both teams traded misses in the second. In the third overtime, Sean Frazer gave Bethel a 16-13 lead.

On the next Lambuth possession, freshman quarterback Kelvin Martin scored to give Lambuth the win.

Lambuth totaled 451 yards of offense, compared to Bethel's 267. Boyd led all rushers with 104 yards on the ground, and Lambuth's E.J. Adams caught six passes for 106 yards to lead all receivers.

The win is the longest game in Lambuth history and improves the Eagles to 8-0. Bethel drops to 2-6.

Lambuth will face Belhaven Oct. 31 in their homecoming game, and Bethel hosts Kentucky Christian.
