Enhanced patrols expected as part of ‘Operation Home for the Holidays’

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — The busy holiday season sees an increase in traffic related incidents and tragedies. One local sheriff’s office has launched a new initiative to ensure safety on the roadways.

“Operation Home for the Holidays” is a go. Due to the anticipated significant increase in travel, the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office has increased patrol in high traffic and high crash zones.

“During this time of year, it can be a very tragic time because many people find themselves traveling and we want them to be safe going home to their families,” said Stephen Sutton, public information officer for Crockett County Sheriff’s Office.

Through the governor’s safety office, CCSO was awarded $30,000 in additional funding to pay for overtime for deputies.

“We’ve increased our enforcement efforts throughout the county for the entire year. With the addition of the governor’s highway safety office funding, we’re increasing our enforcement efforts throughout the county,” said Sutton.

The sheriff’s office also hit a major safety milestone over the weekend. From April 14, 2024, to December 14, 2025, they’ve reported there have been no traffic fatalities in the county.

“So, one of the things that our deputies and our local police departments have tried to increase this year is not just enforcement but also being present on our highways and our roadways so that there’s a visible reminder to practice safety while driving,” said Sutton.

Patrol deputies will be watching out for impaired and distracted driving, as well as other hazardous behaviors. Sutton says it’s not just traffic enforcement you’ll see during this time, they’ll also be cracking down on various other crimes.

“We don’t want there to be any tragedies, any accidents as result of impaired driving, distracted driving, not wearing your seatbelt. We want everyone to be safe, so that they can be home for the holidays,” said Sutton.

Sutton says this is not to impose an extra burden on families, but rather to get everyone home safe for the holidays.

The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office encourages all drivers to stay vigilant, obey traffic laws, and be considerate of others on the road.
