Tips on preventing pests, critters from getting inside your home this winter

JACKSON, Tenn. — Have you ever struggled with pests getting into your home, sheds, or even cars?

With the extreme cold temperatures we have been having in West Tennessee, we have some tips on how to prevent these animals from getting into these areas.

It is very common when temperatures drop that pests try to get into warmer areas which could include your home, sheds, or cars.

The most common types of animals that get into these spaces include raccoons, opossums, cats, and skunks. However, it is possible to see activity from cockroaches, ants, and termites.

District Manager Cory Smith with Cook’s Pest Control in Jackson tells us some signs to look for when an animal is in your home.

“A lot of times, people will see the droppings first maybe some gnaw marks on some things. Inside someone’s home they may find food that has been opened up in their pantry’s with gnaw marks on it,” said Smith.

One of the most common areas an animal will try to stay warm in is crawl spaces. However, smith says it is possible for them to find other places.

“I would check any closets that aren’t used–any spare bedrooms. Check cabinets especially around sinks where drains and things are coming through the floor,” said Smith.

Smith also gives some tips on how to prevent animals from getting in spaces.

“We would recommend exclusion. Making sure your vents and crawl space doors are intact. They’ve got screen coverings on them. Seal up any gaps and holes with copper mesh things like that,” said Smith.

Animals are prone to getting inside car engines and smith says to sound your car alarm before starting it.

“I would recommend sounding the horn a few times before you go out to start it. Hit the lock button a few times to sound the alarm to get them to run away before starting the vehicle,” said Smith.

It is also recommended to keep clutter cleaned up to prevent them from hiding in more spaces. If you see signs of an animal in these places, you may call a local professional for an inspection.
